UNDERSTANDING LIVING LOSS

Some losses change our lives without a clear ending.

Living loss names the meaningful changes, absences, and transitions that can shape a life even when there is no funeral or public ritual. A person, place, role, ability, or hoped-for future may still matter deeply after the relationship with it has changed.

The loss may be ongoing, uncertain, or difficult to explain. Someone can be adapting to a new reality while still missing what was, what felt secure, or what they believed would be possible. Recognizing that loss gives it language and makes room for an honest conversation.

Relationships & connection

Changes in partnership, friendship, family, or community can alter attachment, identity, and daily life.

What this can look like: Estrangement, separation, a friendship ending, or losing a community you once relied on.

A WIDER FIELD OF VIEW

Living loss and disenfranchised grief

Living loss describes what may be grieved. Disenfranchisement describes how grief may be denied recognition or support. They can overlap, but they are not identical. A person grieving estrangement, for example, may also face comments that dismiss the loss because the other person is still alive.

HLL is not intended to replace traditional bereavement education. We believe the field needs both. Some losses involve clear endings. Others remain unresolved, uncertain, ongoing, or difficult to explain. HLL focuses on preparing coaches and helping professionals to recognize and responsibly support grief in those overlooked spaces.

THE HEART OF HLL

Not Every Loss Comes With Closure

Living-loss coaching is not about forcing closure. Sometimes closure never arrives. There may be no apology. No accountability. No repaired relationship. No explanation that finally makes everything make sense.

“A person can learn to live with an open tab without spending every day trying to close it.”
