ABOUT HEALING LIVING LOSS

Why Healing Living Loss Exists

Healing Living Loss is a coaching academy created to strengthen education about living loss and disenfranchised grief. We teach aspiring coaches, practicing coaches, and helping professionals how to recognize overlooked loss and approach it with skill, care, and ethical boundaries.

THE BEGINNING

From Lived Experience to a Different Kind of Education

In 2017, HLL’s founder sought grief support following the estrangement of a close family member. The relationship had changed profoundly, but there was no definitive ending and little support available for understanding the grief that followed.

Even finding language for the experience was difficult. Years later, while training in grief coaching, another gap became clear. Disenfranchised grief and many forms of living loss were largely absent from the education. When the need for this subject was raised, the response was that it was not considered necessary.

HLL was created from the belief that this education IS necessary. Conversations with others revealed similar experiences: people grieving family estrangement, the loss of friendships, pet loss, changing family roles, relationships affected by abuse, and futures that did not unfold as expected.

A WIDER FIELD OF VIEW

Bridging the Gap in Grief Education

HLL is not intended to replace traditional bereavement education. We believe the field needs both. Some losses involve clear endings. Others remain unresolved, uncertain, ongoing, or difficult to explain. HLL focuses on preparing coaches and helping professionals to recognize and responsibly support grief in those overlooked spaces.

01 / THE EXPERIENCE

Something meaningful had been lost, but the grief was not always recognized.

02 / THE EDUCATIONAL GAP

Living loss and disenfranchised grief needed a clearer place in professional education.

03 / THE CREATION OF HLL

A learning institution took shape around the belief that this education is necessary.

THE HEART OF HLL

Not Every Loss Comes With Closure

Living-loss coaching is not about forcing closure. Sometimes closure never arrives. There may be no apology. No accountability. No repaired relationship. No explanation that finally makes everything make sense.

The work can instead become learning how to build a meaningful life while an unanswered question remains unanswered. HLL wants trained professionals to help clients recognize what has been lost, understand its impact, explore present needs and boundaries, reconnect with values, and identify meaningful next steps—not to provide those client services itself.

“A person can learn to live with an open tab without spending every day trying to close it.”

OUR VALUES

What Guides Our Work

01

CARE

People deserve to have their losses approached with curiosity and compassion rather than comparison or judgment.

02

HONESTY

We do not believe grief needs to be made inspirational, rushed, or neatly resolved in order for meaningful growth to occur.

03

INCLUSION

Grief does not belong to one type of person, relationship, family structure, identity, culture, or life experience.

04

ETHICAL BOUNDARIES

Supporting someone well includes understanding the limits of your role.

05

PRACTICAL SKILL-BUILDING

Students should leave HLL training with more than information. They should leave knowing how to apply what they learned.
